Meta: Product Design Intern, Summer 2022

Resource Sharing to the
Emotional Health Library

at a glance

The Emotional Health Resource Library is designed to provide group administrators with easy access to emotional health resources for their community members.

As a product design intern, I ideated and designed a new experience for sharing emotional health resources on the Groups surface and the Resource Library on the Facebook platform, resulting in an increase of accessibility and community growth for group administrators and members of lifestage groups.

JUMP TO SOLUTION

the problem

How might we...

provide a way for Community Admins to share mental health resources to their members?

the goal

Our goal is to...

encourage and empower community admins to share helpful and relevant mental health resources to the Emotional Health Resource Library, increasing access to mental health resources for members.

user research

User Needs Takeaways

Need from admins:

“My community members have mental health support needs and I wish I had ways to encourage my members to better support each other.”

Takeaway?

Access to emotional health resources and seeking help needs to be normalized and relevant to individuals.

Need from members:

“I want to learn about how to take care of my mental health, but I don’t know what information is a good fit for me.”

Users study

Community admins vs members?

Admins of groups are able to gather and share emotional health resources they feel helpful and relevant to their community members.

Members of groups are able to interact with the emotional health resources that admins have highlighted in the group.

USER PERSONA

Meet Emily

By day, Emily is a software engineer. In her spare time, she enjoys going for walks by the lake or playing tennis. She is also a community admin for a popular mental health group on Facebook.

Her goals are supporting and uplifting her group members. She also wants to have open and honest conversations about mental health.

Her frustrations as an admin is not having a community space to share her struggles, and a lack of mental health resources to share.

introducing

The Emotional Health Resource Library

The Emotional Health Resource Library is a toolkit for community admins and members to access emotional health resources on ther Facebook platform.

DESIGN PROCESS

How does an admin share an emotional health resource?

SOLUTION

How can an admin share the resource to their group?

Before

Issues:
Does not display communities that an admin manages, integral part of adding to the emotional health resource library.

Goal:
Inform admins of their sharing options in an organized front.

After

1. Able to see the different communities one admins vs manages.

2.
Meta text displays last post activity - informs the admin of which groups are more active therefore increasing the opportunity of engagement with the resource.

3. Removed the pins since ranking a group isn’t a main priority - focus is on the admin vs member journey.

SOLUTION

How can an admin share the resource to the Emotional Health Resource Library?

There were MANY pathways...

In order to optimize the sharing experience for both community admins and members, we needed to understand how and where these resources could be shared.

The group feed, pinned as a feature, and the emotional health resource library.

solution

Native app for monitoring and supervision during the date

Onboarding

After the user has seen the various uses that can benefit her in the use of our product we will ask her to identify as a woman to protect the purity of the product and to raise in her a sense of security.

Background Check

To motivate the user to use the app, we will lead her to run a background check on one of the guys she is communicating with. Checking the background can empower the value we offer - a sense of security and control - knowledge is power.

Date Entry

While entering the date data the app gathers all the information needed to provide the user with the protection she needs. The step will be broken down into several steps to reduce the effort required from the user which will also help to focus her at every step.

During the Date

During the date, the app will send alerts according to the settings we set on the "date entry".

Reporting

To collect information that will be useful to our users, at the end of each date the user will be asked to report the date. We will make sure at this point to lower her concerns by security stamp and noting the fact that the information she is providing remains confidential.

final solution

User Journey: Sharing an emotional health resource from a community admin's feed to their group and to the resource library.

what i learned

During my internship at Meta, I gained invaluable insights and personal growth:

Seeking Help

One of the most significant lessons was to ask for help the moment I got stuck on something. As an intern, I had access to a wealth of resources and people, and I quickly learned to utilize and take advantage of them. At Meta, I discovered that people are very open to reaching out and assisting, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

Feed Your Curiosity

I realized the importance of feeding my curiosity without hesitation. I learned not to be afraid to participate in activities, ask questions – even if they seemed simple – or explore the office aimlessly. Surprisingly, during these explorations, I often stumbled upon unexpected opportunities and valuable insights that went beyond my initial expectations.

Embrace Opportunities

I received a valuable piece of advice from my manager: "Be selfish." This wisdom encouraged me to take advantage of all the opportunities, both those presented to me and those I sought out independently. This proactive approach allowed me to learn and grow continuously during my internship.

Document Everything

I discovered the power of documentation. From capturing my thoughts on my first day at work to noting how I felt when I finally resolved a challenging issue, I learned to document my journey comprehensively. This practice not only brought clarity to my work but also helped me overcome imposter syndrome and gain confidence in my decision-making processes.

Next steps

Understanding Admin Preferences:

If my internship had gone longer, I wish to delve deeper into understanding the most frequently used sharing options and what admins value the most. This involves gathering insights into admin behaviors and preferences to further refine the sharing process and make it even more tailored to their needs.
